Brainstorming an Essay

To start the year, we're going to write a 5 paragraph essay. All freshmen will write this essay, but most will start it later in the year. I like to get it out of the way right away, so ours should be finished within the first week or two of school.

Our topic for this first (of many) essay we'll write together is "An Influential Person." As we discussed in class, an influential person can be someone who's influenced your life in a positive or a negative way. You can learn what to do and what NOT to do from those who enter and exit your life. Speaking of that, this person does not necessarily have to be alive or someone who's ever lived at all. It could be a character or cartoon from a TV show, movie, comic strip, or book.

Here's what we brainstormed for possibilities:

neighbor
parent
grandparent
aunt/uncle
sibling
pet
superhero
friend
sports player
musician
actor
a stranger
coach
manager
comedian
niece/nephew
someone from church

This list is a good start. Next class we'll start the actual essay because you all chose someone to write about in such an efficient manner. I can't wait to read about all of the people who've influenced your life!
