We had an extremely productive day today. We read chapter one in Of Mice and Men, finding quotations and brainstorming about our two main characters George and Lennie as we read, and we finished the chapter one reading guide quiz. Phew.
Here's what we came up with for George:
Observant
Aware
Hunter
Funny
Mountain Man
Irritated
Very Smart
Active
Caretaker
Father-Like
And for Lennie:
Big
"Pale Eyes"
"Slouched Shoulders"
innocent
Does he understand death?
Short term memory loss
Memory has defects
About 4 or 5 mental age
Probably in his 30's
Moves heavily
Moves carelessly
Can't survive on his own
Animal lover
In addition to creating this brainstorm list, we talked about foreshadowing. Randy helped us to define foreshadowing as the author's "hints" as to what will happen in the future. This is a pretty good definition of this literacy term. We made a couple of predictions as to what'll happen in this book based on the events of chapter one. They are:
Lennie will get into trouble again, like he did in Weed
Lennie will have to return to the campsite to find George after he gets in trouble
Lennie will hurt an animal in the future
These are pretty solid predictions. Let's see whether or not they occur later on in the book.
