Book of the Week

I read this week's Book of the Week in a few hours. I literally could not put it down. It's called In Ecstasy and it's written by Kate McCaffrey. As the title suggests, this book is about the drug ecstasy, which is supposed to give the user an euphoric high.

At first, the two narrators of this book, Mia and Sophie, are best friends and are able to handle the new party scene that they've become entangled in. They have met cute, older boys and are having tons of fun partying and going to raves. After a while, though, the best friends find themselves straying from each other and start to follow separate paths. Sophie is the first to discover a the dark side of the party life, but it takes Mia a long time to see where the endless party and pill-popping is leading her. Both girls put themselves in some serious danger.

I don't want to give away much of what happens in this book, but I do want to warn you that this is a realistically written book and that that author does not tiptoe around issues of drug use and sexual assault. It's graphic, but in a very real way. The back and forth narration between the two friends allows for some suspense and allows the reader to see the same situation from two perspectives. It's well written and it's pretty fast paced.

You can find this book on the free reading shelves at the back of the room. Please make sure to sign it out and bring it back for others who may be interested.
