Poetry Thursday and The Absolutely True Diary

Though I had a minor mishap with a contact lens, all turned out well in today's class. We copied down a beautiful poem from author Naomi Shihab Nye called "Two Countries". We discussed some of the language of this poem, particularly the repetition of choice words and the double consciousness connection to our book.

After our poem, we moved on to reading from The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. We had some major excitement in today's reading, including a trip to the hospital for Arnold. Arnold seems like he'll recover, but it's not clear that his friendship with Rowdy is ever going to be like it was at the start of the book. After all, Rowdy is the one who gave Arnold the concussion that landed him in the hospital.

Although Arnold no longer has Rowdy's protection, we have seen Arnold's entire basketball team, including the coach, turn out to support Arnold. Though they may not understand reservation life, they are definitely behind Arnold 100%.

We have a lot of loose ends to clear up next class, like our double consciousness cartoon and an Opinion Piece over Columbus Day. In the meantime, enjoy your long weekend.
