Speak and Prefix Vocabulary Words

After SSR, we continued to read from Speak. We're having such great discussions as we read that we're not quite completing all that I had hoped. I guess that, in the grand scheme of things, this is not the worst problem that I could be having right now. We left off on page seventy-three today and we'll pick up there next class.

Today's prefix extension activity worked out pretty well. You all paired up, were assigned a prefix, and found three to five words in the dictionary or thesaurus that both expressed the meaning of your prefix and could be related to Melinda's situation in Speak. When every pair had their words, you all rewrote them on the whiteboard (see pic). We then went around the room and you spoke about a word that you could connect to Speak and made that connection aloud for us. It is interesting to think about the variety of ways in which a single word can relate to something we're all reading, depending on how you think about it. Very interesting. Good work!
