Flag Raisin' Political Discussion

Today we used an opinion piece, number ten in fact, to talk about a controversy that has recently erupted in our small town. Susan Crane, a UMF student, placed handmade American flags on the floor of the UMF student center. This project was part of a social experiment Crane was conducting for an art class. Crane has drawn lots of criticism for placing flags on the ground, though her study found that about 98% of people walked around the flag rather than on them.

The purpose of the study was for people to "examine their own patriotism," Crane told the Daily Bulldog. This explanation has not stopped several veterans from organizing a protest.

In reference to your own patriotism, what would you have done? Would you have walked on or around the flags?
