Reader's Theater

Reader's Theater is a term that describes what we'll be doing in class with Day of Tears. This book is set up almost like a play, but with very little action. Therefore, we will use dramatic voices rather than acting skills when we read this novel.

Today we started Day of Tears and read to page twenty-nine. You all did a wonderful job reading the parts of Sarah, Mattie, Will, the Master, the slave-seller, Frances, and Emma.

We also had a conversation about the N-word. We discussed why this word would be included in books about slavery and why authors would use it. But, we decided that if you are uncomfortable saying this word that you don't have to. It is a powerful word with a lot of violence and hatred in its history. It was a good discussion.

At the end of the reading, we completed a reading guide. We'll finish the "A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words" project next class.
