Sometimes, what makes a writer great is not that they're super profound or larger than life, but that they're real. Stephen King, in my opinion, is one such writer. His books are wonderful if you want a read that is totally entertaining, engrossing, and just plain yucky.
This man has published many works, has all kinds of money, but stillmanages to be active in Maine and is super-real. Just like I somteimes need a Happy Meal with a girl toy, I sometimes need a Stephen King fix. Thank goodness he's content to be who he is and write what he writes.
