After SSR, we read to the "Third Marking Period" in Speak. We discussed a number of Melinda-related issues, but the main one that sticks out in my mind is the fact that her rapist, Andy Evans, continues to abuse her with his words and looks. We spent a good deal of time talking about why he might want to continue to harass her in this manner. You cam up with:
-He wants to keep her afraid so that she won't tell on him
-He might think that the sex was consensual
-He might think he's flirting with her
-He wants power over her
After today's reading, we each pulled a new vocabulary word out of the bad. They are:
confess
invisible
splintered
punish
nervous
guilt
rebellion
emotion
conquer
silence
anger
bleak
To help define these words, you each created a your own definitions using examples of how the word relates to the book and the characters in the book. We went around as a group and shared our examples and added in any that the rest of the group was able to come up with. We will use these words as we continue reading Speak and as we write our letters.
