The Life of a Recluse

Today we will be talking about recluses. According to The New Oxford American Dictionary, a recluse is "a person who lives a solitary life and tends to avoid other people." What drives someone to become a recluse? We can certainly determine through our reading of Into the Wild that Chris McCandless comes off as a bit of a recluse.

Today we will explore the world of recluses by learning about famous recluses from the literary world. Choose one of the three following people:

J.D. Salinger

Emily Dickinson

Henry David Thoreau

You will spend some time researching these people and reading information about them. After you have done this, you will make a blog post, answering the following questions:

What is this person famous for specifically (name some literary works)?

How did they withdraw from society?

How are they similar to Chris McCandless?

What time period did this person live in? What was going on in society then?

Provide one quote from this person.

Make sure to include an appropriate image.
