Banned Books Week: The Absolutely True Diaries of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

Banned Books Week officially begins next week. It is sponsored by the American Library Association. We're getting a head start because one of the books we're reading right now

Sherman Alexie is no stranger to controversy. There are parents all over the country who are calling for the removal of his young adult novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. In today's class, we're going to read some of the news articles about the upset that this book is causing. On your blogs, you're going to react to one (or more) of these articles. You will respond to the following questions:

Do you think that this book is appropriate material for public school students? You can either agree or disagree with this issue. Please address at least one of the major concerns (inappropriate language, racist language, the drawings, etc.) that parents/ community members have voiced in your argument.
