Newsday Tuesday and The Absolutely True Diary Continued

Thanks to our Newsday Tuesday reporters who informed us about the latest news from Time magazine. We heard about the devastation in Detroit, about a crumbling Wall Street, a new album from The Kings of Leon, the new Where the Wild Things Are movie and how Las Vegas plans to recover from the financial meltdown. Those of you who are in the second round of reporters took your magazines for next Tuesday's assignment. Good work.

After this, we read a long section of The Absolutely True Diaries, where Arnold finally gets a chance to show rowdy just how good Rearden High School has been for his basketball skills. Though Arnold rises to get heights (literally) against his former teammates, he sees that the Wellpinit team has little to look forward to beyond glory on the high school basketball circuit. He predicts that none of the rez kids will attend college, that some will become alcoholics, and that all will be stuck on the rez. Definitely different from his prediction for his more affluent, white teammates. Though he feels like a bit of a traitor, he sure played a great game.

At the end of class, we decided to head outside and sit in a circle on the grass. I don't know what inspired this change of location, but this may be one of the last times we can go outside and have idel conversation until next spring. It's shaping up to be a long New England-style winter. Let's enjoy the sunshine while it lasts.
