Sandra Cisneros

After vacation, we will begin reading The House on Mango Street (one of my favorite books ever--you should be super-psyched!) by Sandra Cisneros. It is her memoir--although she writes of her life experiences through fictional characters. She presents her story in vignette style. We will spend quite a bit of time discussing memoir and vignette in class today, but for those of you who are absent the brief definition of each is:

memoir: "a historical account or biography written from personal knowledge or special sources."
vignette: "a brief evocative description, account, or episode."

These concepts should be familiar, since we have just finished reading Elie Weisel's memoir, Night. Since we will begin reading this memoir when we return from spring break, we will spend time today collecting some background information on the author of the memoir. After break, we will also begin a vignette project of our own, which will involve lots of creative writing. Therefore, today, we will practice some creative writing as we gather information on Sandra Cisneros by writing Bio Poems about her. This is the format we will write the poems in:

Happy writing!
